The STAR Online:Fuss over Edison Chen, our own young brands shunned
I AM disgusted and amazed with the publicity given to Edison “sex scandal boy” Chen on his newly launched outlet.
When Liz Wong’s “not-even-nude” pictures were found leaked, it shook the nation, and we criticised the victim like she had no more value. And when Dr Chua Soi Lek’s secretly filmed video was released, we “tried” to make sure that he does not return to the government scene.
But when a former Hong Kong star launched a new brand in Bangsar, this young man and his brand got full media coverage and was featured in the “most important page” in the paper. I am not writing to judge nor am I writing to release anger on the EDC brand. But coming from a young heart and the youth community, I feel betrayed and I feel a sense of injustice.
There are so many young brands out there, brands which are established and built with all the passion and toughness by our very own young Malaysians. These young brands are trying hard to get press coverage.
We have been talking so much about youth development, youth entrepreneurship. Is the EDC story more important than the many inspiring stories our Malaysian youths have got to share?
BERNARD HOR,
Kuala Lumpur.
